1. Overview

AOSI (Australian Open Services Index) is an open-source research project. We are committed to protecting your privacy. This policy explains what data we collect, why, and how we handle it.

2. What we collect

3. What we do NOT collect

• We do not use cookies (no tracking cookies, no analytics cookies, no session cookies)
• We do not use Google Analytics, Facebook Pixel, or any third-party tracking
• We do not collect your name, email, IP address for profiling, or any personal identifiers
• We do not sell, share, or transfer any user data to third parties
• We do not create user accounts or profiles

4. Location data

When you use the "Near me" feature, your browser asks for your permission before sharing your location. If you grant permission:

• Your coordinates are used entirely in your browser to calculate distances to services
• Your location is never transmitted to our servers
• Your location is not stored persistently — it is discarded when you close or refresh the page

You can deny the location prompt and the site will work normally — you just won't see distance-based sorting.

5. Third-party services

The site loads resources from the following third-party services:

• Vercel — hosting platform. Subject to Vercel's privacy policy. Vercel may process standard web server logs (IP address, user agent, request URL).
• CARTO / Esri — map tile providers. Loading map tiles transmits your IP address and approximate viewport to these providers.
• Google Maps — linked for directions only (not embedded). You leave our site when you click a directions link.

6. Data about services

The service records displayed on this site are sourced from publicly available government datasets and OpenStreetMap. This data may include names, addresses, phone numbers, and descriptions of organisations. It does not contain personal data about individuals. If you believe a record contains personal information that should be removed, please report it on GitHub.

7. Children's privacy

This site is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect data from children.

8. Australian Privacy Act

As an open-source research project, AOSI may not be bound by the Australian Privacy Act 1988 in the same way as a commercial entity. However, we voluntarily follow its principles as good practice, particularly the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs) regarding collection limitation, data quality, and transparency.

9. Your rights

Since we don't collect or store personal data, there is typically nothing to access, correct, or delete. If you have concerns, contact us via GitHub.

10. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. Changes will be reflected in the "last updated" date above. Since we don't collect email addresses, we cannot notify you directly — please check this page periodically.
